IFD faculty and researchers specialize in the development and application of modern computational and experimental techniques to investigate a broad spectrum of problems in fluid dynamics. A specific area of technical competence is the development of advanced numerical simulation techniques (DNS, LES and PDF methods) for engineering flows. On the experimental side, the emphasis lies on the development of quantitative flow imaging diagnostics for research and industrial applications.

In teaching, IFD provides the basic training in fluid mechanics for all mechanical engineers at ETH. In addition, a number of advanced classes are being offered at the Bachelor and Master level. The institute offers its own Master's specialization ("Fluid Science & Engineering") and participates in others, notably in aerospace engineering.
